Overseas-constitution Freemasonry in India

English, Irish and Scottish constitutional Lodges continue in India alongside the sovereign Grand Lodge of India. They are parallel recognised Craft jurisdictions: UGLE publishes Districts in Bengal, Bombay, Madras and Northern India, Ireland lists its Provincial Grand Lodge in India, and Scotland lists a District Grand Lodge of India.

This is chiefly a guide to constitutional position in India: what Overseas-constitution Freemasonry in India governs, how its local bodies are warranted and where recognition questions need an official answer. What it is

Overseas-constitution Freemasonry in India is a governing or coordinating body rather than a degree to be collected. The useful local questions concern its warranted Lodges, recognition relationships, territorial authority and candidate process.

Why people explore it

Readers comparing India's constitutional history or seeking a lodge that works under an overseas Grand Lodge.

What not to assume

Overseas-constitution Freemasonry in India is not a degree above another Masonic body. It is a governing or coordinating structure, and its authority and recognition cannot be inferred from size, age or a familiar emblem.

Documented chronology

  1. Lodges under the three parent constitutions voted individually on joining a proposed sovereign Indian Grand Lodge. [1]

  2. The Grand Lodge of India was constituted after 145 of 277 eligible Lodges opted in. [1]

  3. The English, Irish and Scottish Grand Lodges continue to publish Indian District or Provincial structures. [2] [3] [4]

Why several recognised constitutions remain

The official Indian history says the proposed national Grand Lodge was offered as a choice, not imposed as a territorial merger. Of 277 eligible Lodges, 145 opted in; Lodges declining were expressly allowed to continue under England, Ireland or Scotland. [1]

That decision explains today's plural landscape. The Grand Lodge of India is sovereign over its own warranted Lodges, while the parent Grand Lodges remain sovereign over theirs. Recognition permits Masonic relations but does not combine their constitutions. [1] [2] [3] [4]

What each official directory currently proves

UGLE lists District Grand Lodges of Bengal, Bombay, Madras and Northern India and describes a District as the overseas equivalent of a Province. Ireland lists a Provincial Grand Lodge of Ireland in India among its overseas Provinces. [2] [3]

The Grand Lodge of Scotland's official directory lists a District Grand Lodge of India among its overseas administrations. These current listings are stronger evidence than an undated third-party map or an old Lodge badge. [4]

Joining, transfer and visiting

A candidate joins a particular warranted Lodge, not 'overseas Freemasonry' in the abstract. Age, belief, residence, proposal, ballot and fees must be checked under the parent constitution and District or Province handling the enquiry. [2] [3] [4]

Likewise, a member transferring or visiting should use his Grand Secretary and the receiving authority. Shared recognition may enable visits or affiliation, but it does not make membership portable without formal process or convert one constitution's appendant degrees into another's. [1] [2] [3] [4]

How to choose a useful comparison

The practical comparison is local: warranting authority, meeting place, calendar, ritual tradition, language, membership expectations and the Lodge's actual health. A famous constitutional label is less useful if its nearest Lodge is not realistically accessible. [2] [3] [4]

This page may help a candidate who needs to identify authority before enquiring, or a Mason comparing recognition and affiliation. Readers primarily interested in Indian-governed Craft should begin with the Grand Lodge of India guide; later Royal Arch, Mark or RAM choices must be checked within the correct constitution. [1]

Key distinction

These Lodges are not foreign-themed branches of the Grand Lodge of India and not side orders; their warrants, membership records and rules come from their respective parent Grand Lodges.
