Sovereign Craft Grand Lodge / India
Grand Lodge of India
The Grand Lodge of India is a sovereign Craft Grand Lodge constituted in 1961 after Indian Lodges under the English, Irish and Scottish constitutions voted on joining a new national authority. It is the principal Indian Grand Lodge, but recognised overseas-constitution Lodges continue separately in India.
This is chiefly a guide to constitutional position in India: what Grand Lodge of India governs, how its local bodies are warranted and where recognition questions need an official answer. By Beyond the Craft Editorial Team · Published 14 June 2026 · Last reviewed 21 June 2026 · 8 min read.
What it is
Grand Lodge of India is a governing or coordinating body rather than a degree to be collected. The useful local questions concern its warranted Lodges, recognition relationships, territorial authority and candidate process.
Why people explore it
Readers seeking the principal sovereign Indian Craft jurisdiction and a route grounded in regional lodge life.
What not to assume
Grand Lodge of India is not a degree above another Masonic body. It is a governing or coordinating structure, and its authority and recognition cannot be inferred from size, age or a familiar emblem.
Documented chronology
Sovereignty by an opt-in vote
The official history records that 145 of 277 eligible Lodges chose the new Grand Lodge. Lodges that did not opt in retained their English, Irish or Scottish constitutional relationships. [2]
That vote explains the plural recognised landscape still visible in India. The Grand Lodge of India is sovereign over its own Lodges, not a territorial owner of every recognised Masonic unit operating in the country. [1] [2]
A long pre-1961 history
The Grand Lodge’s overview places organised English constitutional activity in India by 1729 and describes later military, railway and civic Lodge networks. The national Grand Lodge therefore emerged from a much older multi-constitutional setting. [1]
Individual biographical claims on broad historical pages still deserve source-by-source scrutiny. The strongest institutional evidence here is the documented Grand Lodge process and its surviving constitutional record. [1] [2]
Published entry principles
The public joining page states belief in a Supreme Being and presents honour, tolerance, service and ethical life as core expectations. A candidate still needs the current Lodge-level proposal and enquiry procedure. [3]
The official site publishes Lodge rolls and meeting calendars, allowing a reader to identify an actual warranted Lodge rather than treating a national contact form as membership itself. [1] [3]
Who may value it
The Grand Lodge may suit someone seeking an Indian-governed Craft constitution with regional administration and published structures for Lodge life, charity and education.
Royal Arch, Mark and Royal Ark Mariner structures are published alongside Craft within the wider Indian organisation, but each has its own officers, rolls and rules. Overseas-constitution Lodges remain a separate comparison rather than an appendant route. [1]
Key distinction
The 1961 foundation marks Indian Masonic sovereignty, not the beginning of Freemasonry in India and not the absorption of every recognised Lodge in the country.
Key questions
Frequently asked questions
What most distinguishes Grand Lodge of India?
The 1961 foundation marks Indian Masonic sovereignty, not the beginning of Freemasonry in India and not the absorption of every recognised Lodge in the country.
Who may join Grand Lodge of India?
Applicants approach a warranted lodge or the Grand Lodge's official enquiry route. The published essentials include being a man aged at least 21 and belief in a Supreme Being; local enquiry, proposal and ballot rules must still be confirmed. Check the current Lodge or district directory and ask the named constitutional office for advice relevant to India.
How should its history be understood?
An English Provincial Grand Master was appointed for activity centred on Fort William, Calcutta. The useful chronology is the record of warrants, unions and constitutional authority, not the age claimed by a local tradition.
What should I compare with Grand Lodge of India?
Start with Overseas constitutions and Royal Arch under GLI. Compare what each authority warrants, recognises and administers before comparing ritual labels.
