How Beyond the Craft selects sources, handles uncertainty and corrects its independent educational content.
Beyond the Craft aims to be useful without pretending to be an official authority. The relevant governing body always has the final word on recognition, eligibility and membership.
Educational purpose
Content explains the public structure and character of Masonic orders. It is not professional advice, ritual instruction or an official joining service.
Source priority
We prefer current governing-body websites, constitutions, official histories and recognised directories. Independent archives are clearly identified where no public official source is available.
Accuracy approach
Requirements are checked against public sources and described cautiously. “Typically”, “often” and similar terms are used where practice varies by Province, local body or jurisdiction.
Original summaries
Profiles are written as original summaries. Short names and factual titles may necessarily match official usage, but the site does not reproduce substantial official text or private ritual.
Independence
Coverage does not imply endorsement, recognition or governance by UGLE or another body. Advertising, if enabled, does not influence editorial inclusion or conclusions.

What we check before publication
Before a guide is treated as source-led, the page should identify the governing body, the basic eligibility route, the relationship to Craft or other Masonic bodies, and the distinction between documented history and symbolic tradition.
Where possible, current rules are checked against official pages from the body itself. If a body has no reliable public source, the page should either say that evidence is limited or avoid making detailed claims about admission, cost, meeting practice or history.
How claims are labelled
Official description
A body’s own public explanation of its purpose, eligibility, structure or history. This is useful evidence, but it is still attributed to that body.
Masonic tradition
A symbolic or inherited narrative used within Masonic culture. It may be meaningful without proving continuous historical institution.
Editorial interpretation
A Beyond the Craft explanation that helps compare bodies or make practical sense of public evidence. It should not be presented as an official ruling.
Publication and review signals
Editorial articles and order guides identify the Beyond the Craft Editorial Team, publication date and latest update date. Dates indicate when the page itself was published or materially reviewed; they do not imply that every external source was created on that date.
Major factual changes are checked against current official material where it is publicly available. Pages about low-profile bodies clearly identify when no current governing-body source could be located. Recent review work is summarised in the Source Review Log.
Use of publishing tools and AI assistance
The site uses structured generators and automated audits to maintain a consistent layout, find broken links, validate citations and detect repeated copy. AI-assisted tools may also support research organisation, drafting and copy review.
These tools are not cited as authorities and do not make an unsupported claim reliable. Published factual claims should be traceable to the sources displayed on the page; where public evidence is incomplete, the page should say so. Substantive editorial decisions, corrections and advertising separation remain the responsibility of Beyond the Craft.
What we avoid
The site does not knowingly publish private ritual, confidential proceedings, signs, words, modes of recognition or material that would turn an educational guide into a substitute for membership. It does not copy substantial official prose, and it does not use official logos or images to imply endorsement.
The site also avoids “completionist” filler. If reliable public evidence is limited, a concise page with a clear evidence note is preferable to a long page padded with speculation.
How corrections are handled
Corrections are prioritised when they affect eligibility, governance, recognition, historical dates, official affiliation, privacy, advertising disclosure or a reader’s practical next step. Minor wording improvements are usually grouped into wider editorial passes.

Advertising separation
Advertising does not determine which orders are included or how they are described. Any future advertisement must be visually separated from navigation and editorial content. Advertisers cannot purchase favourable coverage, alter eligibility descriptions or suppress corrections.
Legal, contact, newsletter, search, sitemap and other utility pages are not advertising inventory. The site configuration keeps those pages outside the future AdSense allowlist even after advertising is approved and enabled.
