Corporation O’ Squaremen
The Corporation O’ Squaremen is a Scots-language, operative-themed fellowship organised through local Sheds. Buchan Shed No. 4 publicly requires Mark Master Mason standing, but its website explicitly warns that procedures can differ elsewhere; this is not one centrally uniform national order.
A Shed-level public record
Buchan Shed describes the Corporation’s objects as brotherly love, harmony, truth, justice, charity and equality, expressed through an operative and Scots vocabulary. Its own charter date is 1951. [1] [3]
The site repeatedly limits its statements to Buchan. That limitation is valuable evidence against presenting one Shed’s custom as the law of a worldwide order. [1] [2]
Mark qualification in Buchan
Buchan requires proof that a visitor is a Mark Master Mason in good standing and allows enquiry or direct approach. Its joining page also says other Sheds may differ. [1] [2]
A prospective member elsewhere should therefore ask the relevant Shed about qualification, visiting, fees and charitable destination rather than assuming Buchan’s open-door practice applies. [2]
Who may value it
Squaremen may suit a Mark Mason who enjoys Scots language, operative references, travelling fellowship and local charity. Its strength is the culture of the Shed, not a long sequence of nationally standardised grades.
The Operatives offers a more formally structured seven-degree construction system. Noble Corks is closer in informality, but uses nautical comedy rather than building-trade identity. [1] [2]
Local Shed authority matters more than a universal progression chart, and Buchan’s published practice cannot automatically be applied to every Shed.
