August Order of Light
The August Order of Light is a small esoteric order open to Master Masons from constitutions recognised by UGLE. Its documented origin is Maurice Vidal Portman’s late-Victorian attempt to combine Eastern religious ideas with a Western initiatory framework, not an ancient Asian lineage.
A Victorian synthesis, not an imported antiquity
The Order’s history places Maurice Vidal Portman and an 1881 founding document at the beginning of its institutional story. It describes a deliberate synthesis of Indian religious vocabulary, Sat B’hai influence and Western fraternal structure. [1]
That account makes the Order unusual without requiring a claim of ancient transmission. Eastern source material is part of its intellectual construction; it is not evidence that the present organisation is an indigenous Asian order. [1]
Expression of interest and selection
The published route is open to Master Masons under UGLE or a Grand Lodge recognised by UGLE. Applicants provide evidence of Masonic standing, but the Arch Presidents retain sole discretion and the page warns that a decision may take months. [2]
That is a selective enquiry process rather than an invitation-only rule. A prospective member should also check the current Temple locations and travel before treating theoretical eligibility as a practical route. [2] [3]
Who may value it
The Order may suit a Master Mason prepared for sustained comparative study and symbolism outside the more familiar Biblical, operative or chivalric settings. The continuing intellectual programme matters more than the novelty of its terminology.
SRIA is the nearest comparison for organised esoteric study, but its public qualification is explicitly Trinitarian Christian and its Colleges foreground Rosicrucian papers. August Order of Light publishes a different eligibility route and symbolic inheritance. [1] [2]
