Prince Hall Freemasonry
Prince Hall Freemasonry is a historic family of sovereign Grand Lodges rooted in African American Masonic experience. The Conference of Grand Masters Prince Hall Masons is advisory: it encourages cooperation among jurisdictions but assumes only powers agreed by participating Grand Masters.

This is chiefly a guide to constitutional position in United States: what Prince Hall Freemasonry in United States governs, how its local bodies are warranted and where recognition questions need an official answer. What it is
Prince Hall Freemasonry is a governing or coordinating body rather than a degree to be collected. The useful local questions concern its warranted Lodges, recognition relationships, territorial authority and candidate process.
Why people explore it
Readers interested in Black Masonic history, sovereign state traditions, service and fraternity.
What not to assume
Prince Hall Freemasonry is not a degree above another Masonic body. It is a governing or coordinating structure, and its authority and recognition cannot be inferred from size, age or a familiar emblem.
Documented chronology
A chartered Black Masonic tradition
The Conference’s historical material places Prince Hall and African Lodge at the centre of a tradition formed under exclusion from white American Lodges. The English charter supplied a documented constitutional basis for African Lodge. [2]
The later growth of Prince Hall Grand Lodges should not be reduced to an appendant or ethnic branch of another US Grand Lodge system. These are governing jurisdictions with their own histories and officers. [1] [2]
What the Conference does and does not do
The Conference states that it fosters harmony, education, charity and shared progress, while assuming no powers beyond those agreed by Grand Masters attending a meeting. Its jurisdiction directory makes the plural structure visible. [1] [3]
Consequently, candidate requirements, Lodge warrants and recognition are controlled by the appropriate Prince Hall Grand Lodge, not by one conference application. [1] [3]
Recognition is a relationship, not an identity merger
Many Prince Hall and mainstream Grand Lodges now recognise one another, but the exact relationship remains jurisdiction-specific. Recognition permits defined fraternal relations; it does not abolish either Grand Lodge or combine their membership systems.
Readers should verify both sides of a recognition relationship before visiting or transferring rather than relying on an undated national map. [1] [3]
Who may value it
A candidate may value Prince Hall Masonry for its Lodge life, community service, historical continuity and cultural inheritance. The meaningful choice is a warranted local Lodge under the correct sovereign Prince Hall Grand Lodge.
Mainstream Craft is the nearest constitutional comparison, not a higher or lower tier. Prince Hall York Rite, Scottish Rite and Eastern Star bodies are further separately governed organisations. [1] [2]
Key distinction
Prince Hall is neither one national Grand Lodge nor an appendant order of mainstream Masonry; its constituent Grand Lodges possess their own sovereignty and recognition relationships.
Key questions
Frequently asked questions
What most distinguishes Prince Hall Freemasonry?
Prince Hall is neither one national Grand Lodge nor an appendant order of mainstream Masonry; its constituent Grand Lodges possess their own sovereignty and recognition relationships.
Who may join Prince Hall Freemasonry?
Candidates apply through a recognised Prince Hall Affiliated Lodge. Rules are set by the relevant sovereign Grand Lodge, and recognition with another jurisdiction must be checked locally. Check the current Lodge or district directory and ask the named constitutional office for advice relevant to United States.
How should its history be understood?
Prince Hall and fourteen other Black men were initiated through a British military Lodge in Boston. The useful chronology is the record of warrants, unions and constitutional authority, not the age claimed by a local tradition.
