Provincial Craft Grand Lodge / Canada

Grand Lodge of Alberta

The Grand Lodge of Alberta is the sovereign regular Craft authority for Alberta and also supports Lodges in the Northwest Territories. Formed in 1905 from eighteen Lodges previously under Manitoba, it belongs to Canada’s provincial system rather than a national Canadian Grand Lodge.

This is chiefly a guide to constitutional position in Canada: what Grand Lodge of Alberta in Canada governs, how its local bodies are warranted and where recognition questions need an official answer. What it is

Grand Lodge of Alberta is a governing or coordinating body rather than a degree to be collected. The useful local questions concern its warranted Lodges, recognition relationships, territorial authority and candidate process.

Why people explore it

Readers seeking a local Alberta Craft foundation and a clear provincial joining route.

What not to assume

Grand Lodge of Alberta is not a degree above another Masonic body. It is a governing or coordinating structure, and its authority and recognition cannot be inferred from size, age or a familiar emblem.

Documented chronology

  1. A Manitoba-authorised Lodge was instituted and consecrated at Edmonton. [1]

  2. Eighteen Lodges formed the Grand Lodge of Alberta after provincial creation. [1]

  3. The first Annual Communication after constitution met in Medicine Hat. [1]

A provincial Grand Lodge built from Manitoba warrants

The Grand Lodge’s historical account traces early Alberta Lodge formation through the Grand Lodge of Manitoba. It identifies eighteen Lodges as the group that formed the new Alberta authority after the province was created in 1905. [1]

The first Annual Communication in February 1906 followed constitution rather than marking the first local Lodge meeting. These dates describe different institutional layers and should not be merged. [1]

Authority across Alberta and the Northwest Territories

The public enquiry page states that Grand Lodge supports Freemasonry in Alberta and the Northwest Territories and routes an enquirer toward a Lodge in his area. [3]

That territorial reach does not create authority over the other Canadian provincial Grand Lodges. UGLE lists Alberta separately among recognised Canadian jurisdictions. [3] [4]

Published requirements and Lodge selection

The membership material states that applicants are men aged 21 or over, of good character and reputation, and believers in a Supreme Being. It also describes recommendation by two Lodge members and character inquiry before Lodge approval. [2]

The official information form gathers location and background so a local contact can respond. It begins acquaintance; it is not an online petition, ballot or guarantee of admission. [2] [3]

Who may value it

Alberta Craft may suit a man seeking recognised Lodge life, ethical formation and community service within a geographically broad western jurisdiction. Lodge meeting lists provide stronger practical evidence than province-wide generalities. [2] [3]

Saskatchewan is the closest provincial comparison, while Canadian Royal Arch Masonry is separately governed beyond Craft rather than a higher tier within Alberta Grand Lodge. [4]

Key distinction

Alberta’s 1905 sovereignty followed the creation of the province, while its Lodge history reaches back through Manitoba warrants in the former North-West Territories.
