Freemasonry in Tasmania
The Grand Lodge of Tasmania is the sovereign Craft authority formed in June 1890 when Tasmanian Lodges relinquished overseas warrants and united locally. Its history begins earlier with military and colonial Lodge activity, but the present Grand Lodge should not be backdated to those first records.

Documented chronology
Military presence, permanent Lodges, then Grand Lodge
The official history distinguishes travelling military warrants and an 1814 public Masonic presence from permanent resident Lodges formed during the 1820s and 1830s. [1]
In June 1890, Lodges surrendered parent-constitution warrants and formed an autonomous Tasmanian Grand Lodge. Tasmanian Operative Lodge’s earlier Irish history explains why it could become No. 1 without making Grand Lodge itself an 1834 institution. [1]
