Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Germany
The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Germany, usually abbreviated AFuAMvD, is Germany’s largest member Grand Lodge within the United Grand Lodges of Germany federation. It governs its own Lodges and presents a liberal-humanist Craft identity; it is not the sole German Grand Lodge.

This is chiefly a guide to constitutional position in Germany: what Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Germany governs, how its local bodies are warranted and where recognition questions need an official answer. What it is
Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Germany is a governing or coordinating body rather than a degree to be collected. The useful local questions concern its warranted Lodges, recognition relationships, territorial authority and candidate process.
Why people explore it
Men interested in humanitarian Freemasonry, intellectual discussion, tolerance and a nationwide Lodge network.
What not to assume
Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Germany is not a degree above another Masonic body. It is a governing or coordinating structure, and its authority and recognition cannot be inferred from size, age or a familiar emblem.
Documented chronology
The post-war United Grand Lodge of Germany brought together much of the humanitarian German Lodge tradition. [1]
The United Grand Lodges of Germany federation created the present umbrella settlement among member Grand Lodges. [1]
AFuAMvD operates through regional Districts and describes itself as the largest German Grand Lodge by membership. [1]
One Grand Lodge inside a federation
AFuAMvD publicly describes itself as the largest German Grand Lodge and organises Lodges through regional Districts. Its national office and elected leadership govern AFuAM Lodges, not every Lodge belonging to another German member Grand Lodge. [1] [2]
The United Grand Lodges of Germany provides a federated external framework. The diversity beneath it is constitutional, not merely a choice of ritual style within one administrative Grand Lodge. [1] [2]
Humanitarian identity and Lodge autonomy
The Grand Lodge foregrounds human dignity, freedom, self-determination and freedom of conscience. Those stated principles distinguish its public tone from the explicitly Christian integrated systems worked by some German neighbours. [1]
That does not make every Lodge culturally identical. A candidate still needs to understand the particular Lodge’s language, meeting style, calendar and interpretation of the Grand Lodge’s principles. [1]
The published enquiry route
The online membership enquiry states that AFuAM Lodges admit men and forwards an enquiry through the appropriate District to a Lodge. Supplying details begins contact; it does not bypass Lodge acquaintance or admission decisions. [3]
Germany also has women’s and mixed obediences outside this Grand Lodge. AFuAM’s own candidate rule should not be projected onto the entire German Masonic landscape. [1] [3]
Who may value it
AFuAM may suit a man seeking German-language Craft Masonry in a humanitarian tradition with a large geographic network and strong emphasis on freedom of conscience.
The Grand Landlodge offers an integrated Christian Swedish-Rite route. British Freemasonry in Germany provides an English-language member Grand Lodge. Recognition does not make those experiences interchangeable. [1] [2]
Key distinction
AFuAMvD is one sovereign member of Germany’s federated regular structure, distinct from the Swedish-Rite Grand Landlodge, Three Globes and the English-language member Grand Lodges.
